About

Like sneaking peas into a lasagne, our approach is learning through fun and connection.

Our Ethos

Yellow Brick Road Mobility

Yellow Brick Road Mobility is an online orientation and mobility adventures program for young people with blindness/low vision. Think Carmen Santiago with Google Maps, Angus Young using Soundscape or Jane Fonda’s learning body concepts.

With mobility being both physical, ‘Where are you going?’ and social, ‘How can we elevate together?’ – the programs are structured to foster curiosity, engagement and community. Offering programs far and wide across the state, rurally and overseas – YBRM’s approach is fashioned through the joy of connecting young people with

Grounded in traditional Orientation and Mobility Skills for young people with blindness/low vision and then throwing tradition out the window.

YBRM Founder

Clare O’Sullivan

My name is Clare and I have been working in Sensory (d/Deaf/ blindness and low vision and neurodivergence) for over 20 years. It has given me the opportunity to meet so many amazing people and have madcap adventures all over the world.

Five years ago, I wanted to direct my focus on something that achieves tangible goals with people, and I studied to become an Orientation and Mobility (O&M) Specialist. I have enjoyed working with people about where it is that they want to go and supporting them to get there.

As a learner, I learn best when there is laughter and connection, and I aim to bring this to all my sessions.

I think mobility can be both physical and social. Where do you want to go? How do you want to get there? And who do you want to go there with?

FAQs

These programs are created and delivered on Whadjuk Noongar land. I acknowledge traditional First Nation’s practices of orientation — stars to navigate where you are going and songlines about the country you are on. I pay my respects to First Nations people and acknowledge their ongoing connection to land.

How it works?
Sessions are delivered via the Zoom platform. Please get in touch if you would like assistance with this. Allow sessions to go between 1 hour – 1.5 hours. The time goes quicker than you think. From experience, it is the amount of time for the session to be able to take windy directions and for participants to be given the time to share. If we have wound up just after an hour, then I follow the participant’s lead as first and foremost, it has to be fun.

I have done so much zoom/my kiddo has done so much zoom – we are feeling zoomed out!
I gotcha.

  • For this to work it needs to be fun, interactive, and surprising.
  • What being together on this platform can offer folks who are blind or have low vision is accessibility. Everyone is on an even playing field. One person must talk at a time. You can scroll through to know who is there (and remember names!)
  • Good way to dip your toe into a new community in a safe and supported way. You can new try things from the place in which you are most comfortable. Being in your home is a great starting place for building new relationships with trust and respect.
  • Predictability and reliability in uncertain times. You can join if on holidays, from a hospital bed or if you need to stay home. I encourage you to come to all the sessions. Those who have come to all sessions have helped make and shape the program.
  • Connect with folks all over Australia and the world.
